He saved her life.
Now he wants her for himself.

I should have drowned. That’s what everyone says.

My guide knew the rules for entering monster territory, but he broke them anyway. He didn’t survive what happened next. Somehow, I did.

Something in those waters decided I would.

The first time I saw Kael, I thought he was an orca. The second time, I thought I was concussed. By the third, I realized the monster following our ship wasn’t interested in the ship.

He was interested in me.

So, yeah, my vacation got complicated.

Kael is not human. He is not safe. And despite having a degree in marine biology and enough professional experience to know better, I can’t seem to stop going back to the water. It would be easier to blame morbid curiosity if he behaved like any predator I’ve ever studied, but he doesn’t. He watches me, listens to me, and understands far more than he should.

I’m starting to think he’s trying to communicate, and the more terrifying possibility is that I’m beginning to understand him.

Every rule I know says I should stay away, yet every instinct I have seems determined to drag me closer. Humans have spent generations learning how to survive the monsters beneath these waters. But I’m beginning to wonder if we ever understood them at all, because whatever happened to me out there wasn’t an attack.

Now I just need to figure out why the monster who should have let me drown keeps coming back for me.
